March 2010 The Drive to Succeed Motivating others is something I love to do, but when my own batteries need recharging I analyze the motivational aspects in all areas of life. Recently I looked at the drastic differences between the #1 Jay Cutler and #2 Kai Greene bodybuilders in the world to determine what their motivational factors were. I thought thus: if you were a lion on the brink of starvation it stands to reason you would seek food like there was no tomorrow. But, on the other hand, if you have not missed a meal in a while (and you actually have a surplus stored up), would you have the same desire to do whatever it took to eat? Kai Greene grew up as a foster child, no parents in the tough Burroughs of Brooklyn, New York. As Kai prepared to win his first of two Arnold Classic titles in 2009, he was living in a boarding house with no, or very little, money for food. This is tough for the average person but a 5’8, 300 pound bodybuilder - impossible. He could not afford a car, so he had to take a train 2 hours to workout at his gym. This was not some local show, but the second best show in the world. His placing a couple of years preceding this show was last or very close to it. His only solace was his belief in himself and an iron will to succeed. I always say, “It’s not what you are running to that motivates you, it’s what you are running from.” He did win the show in closing.
Jay Cutler on the other hand grew up on a farm and was the golden boy because he won the teenage nationals, had a successful construction business at age 20 that he sold to get into bodybuilding full time. He had a contract as a teenager, invested in Las Vegas real estate, won the Arnold Classic three times and the Mr. Olympia twice. His circumstances were totally opposite from Kai’s. Jay placed second at the Olympia maybe 4 or 5 times, to the point that most thought he would never win. Financially, it didn’t matter if he did - his bodybuilding empire was raking in millions per year. But it mattered to Jay. He felt that in order to make history, he had to stop history in the form of defeating 8-time reigning Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman. The stage was set for Ronnie to break history by winning his ninth title, which had never been done. That was the motivation that Jay needed, and he won. Then, he won again in a controversial decision against Victor Martinez. All the people that once cheered for Jay now questioned if he had the heart of a champion. Then disaster struck. The following year he lost the title to Dexter Jackson. All the naysayers relished in his downfall, giving him no chance to win back the title. Most questioned if he could even make the top 5, why no man in history ever lost and regain the title. Jay didn’t need the money; he had already accomplished more in bodybuilding than he had ever dreamed. Why not retire and continue to make millions and ride off into the sunset? Well, of course the story would not be complete without letting you know Jay came back looking better than ever, and did what no one gave him a chance of doing - winning his Olympia crown back.
Which had to have more desire to win, the one with everything or the one with nothing?
The Motivated Motivator, November 2009 Abuse or Discipline? In the news recently there is so much talk surrounding Michael Jackson’s life. The one part of his life that strikes me the most is the comments made about his father Joe Jackson and how badly he treated his sons. My question is where would they be if not for Joe Jackson. Michael went on to become the greatest entertainer and performer of all time, not a few years but all time. They say his work ethic and his desire for perfection is what separated him from all the other artists. Well, the work ethic and striving for perfection is what his father pushed his sons to do all the time when they were growing up. I say great job Joe Jackson! Back in the days while growing up there was an old saying to kids and that was stay in a kids place. That meant if you stepped out of a kids place you got your ass whipped; that wasn’t abuse, it was good parenting. If you stepped out of a kids place your teacher got you first, then when you got sent home your Ms. Johnson saw you and knew you got in trouble in school, she got you. Your grandparents who lived close by, if not in the same house, they got you and then, when your parents got home they really got you. Was that abuse? No, that was a good upbringing because chances are you didn’t do that again. When you look at kids today having babies, while being babies themselves, there is no respect for teachers - if they even go to school at all! They lack respect for adults or other authority figures because they were never taught respect at home. Priorities and self-respect are in disarray, if they have any at all. If I had to chose between kids of today, who didn’t get that ass whipped, or those of the Joe Jackson era, who raised 9 kids raised in Gary and kept them out of jail and the cemetery, and at the same time, raised the greatest performer that ever lived - I’ll take ass-whipping Joe ANYDAY!!!
Old School Adherent, June 2009 When is Enough Enough? In the pursuit of your dream and ultimate goal, when is enough enough? Is it when you miss your kids growing up before your eyes? Is it when you lose your marriage? Is it when nothing else consumes your thoughts, other than making it through the next day? Is it when holidays and family events become just another day and people are so use to you not showing up that they no longer even invite you, or when they are shocked beyond belief when you finally do show up? Is it when you have borrowed from every single person you know, and are still not much closer to your goal? Is it when pink notices and threats of eviction are commonplace? Is it when you are so deep in it that you feel sorry for your significant other that they have to endure the pain of your passion? I hope I never have to explain to you when enough becomes enough; that is, explaining what it is like to quit before you reach the goal. If you stay in the pursuit long enough to ask these questions, that means you have already made these sacrifices. To make all the sacrifices and still stop short of the dream only reinforces what probably most of the doubters said about you anyway, and you really could have proved the naysayers right early in the race and saved a lot of people, and yourself, a lot of heartache. It is my belief that there are two, and only two, indications when enough is enough 1. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED 2. DEATH
Hangin' in there, April 2009 The Geek Speaks Since writing my column in the March 17, 2009 edition of the Southtown Star, I received one very interesting response to my comment about the use of steroids in sports, especially baseball. Normally after my column runs I get some great feedback, mostly e-mails and phone calls. Ninety-nine percent of them are positive, letting me know how much of a difference my knowledge in fitness is helping change the lives of people I have never met. But I guess when you yank on a dogs tail it will bark every time. I made a comment about pencil-neck geeks posing as sports reporters. Not only did I get a member of that club contact me, I got the President! First of all, I said sports reporters, not sports writers, Phil. This deceptive writer called me pretending to want to discuss our views on the subject then slanted his article to make it sound like an interview. This is what guys that hide behind a computer do. I tried reading some of his articles (obviously like he regularly does mine) to get a feel for his expertise on the subject. After reading a couple of his articles, I decided to do something more exciting like count the blades of grass in my front lawn and watch the paint dry on a room that had not even been painted recently. My opinion is that when you have a bunch of geeks writing about something they never participated or excelled in, you get the type of nonsense that these writers publish. So you confirmed what I thought at first. In the words of Dennis Green, “you are who I thought you were.” I am not a writer, reporter nor am I for or against what other grown people decide to do with their lives. I am a trainer that loves helping people maintain a healthier lifestyle, something that I have done for almost 20 years, and good at it I might add. Be careful whom you try to start beefs with to gain readers for your column. My name, “Sir-Earl,” was given to me by a childhood friend, who gave his life on the streets of Englewood for me. Your comment about where my column is placed in this paper, I believe, is the root cause of this negative attack and a few sleepless nights for you my friend. I dedicate my column to the readers that seek the knowledge and passion for health that I have to offer, not replying to guys like you. If you spent more time making your column meaningful instead of criticizing mine, you might be able to obtain more followers of your writings. Now I will go back to answering the questions of my readers. December 2008 Capitalism is Self-Correcting - If You Work It! After eight years of George W. Bush at the helm, the state of our economy is the worst we’ve seen since the Great Depression. Like the economy, Bush’s approval rating hit record lows, 19% to 23% depending on the pollster. At the same time, there has never been a time in history where we have had as many newly crowned billionaires in such a short period of time. In other words he did his job extremely well for the super rich. Now comes Barrack Obama to save the middle and poor class. I think the crucial point that some are missing is that Barrack can only create opportunities. Anytime there is opportunity creation there are some (mostly blacks) who look for handout programs while others (most other ethnic groups) will take advantage of the real opportunity. But capitalizing on real opportunity often means taking a chance. One of the things that show me not much has changed with our people is now that the economy is in a rut most blacks are running in fear like “chicken little” screaming the sky is falling. They hide their heads in the sand and wait for the great savoir Barrack to come and save the day and their lives. While all this is going on you have other ethnic groups buying stocks, real estate and other valuable assets at fire-sale prices. Blacks are too busy looking at the way things are to see what those things will become in the near future. These times are evolutionary in nature: through despair comes great opportunity. Remember the term “reaganomics” and along with it the savings and loans crises and the concurrent decline in the real estate market. Reaganomics was the root cause behind the 1990–1991 economic recession. Sounds a lot like the aftermath of the Bush administration with the current real estate market downturn and the bank failures, doesn’t it? As blacks we are always the last to catch on to something because we are always too afraid to move first or even second on opportunities. As a matter of fact, we don’t believe it can be done until many other people have done it. At that point it is too late to jump on the bandwagon because the cash cow may have already been milked for all its worth. The fear of failure, along with the instant gratification mindset, not supporting your own, and waiting for others to do for us what we should get off our ass and do for ourselves will not change with a new president. Stop using the economy as an excuse and start making deals today that can make you rich tomorrow. Why not, all the other ethnic groups are doing it.
Stand up my people June 1, 2008 The Fall of the Great Champions
We completed school and came out knee deep in debt; only to be told his friends kid was owed that job. We brought in all the correct paperwork and credentials, but were told sorry we can’t give you the loan. Why we ask? But we already know the answer. Twenty years on the job, what did you get, a gold watch and a retirement check? Then you realize your retirement money was part of the golden parachute plan. How can you start the dream that you know is your only way out when banks do not invest in dreams? Especially those of a black high school drop out with a police record. Some get fed up and resort back to the one place they know, racing against time. Which will happen first the completion or the sentence? These are sometimes the only choice we feel we have - or is it? When my future was in doubt and my belief was shaken to the core, I looked at the path that those fallen champs traveled before. When I reached a fork in the road and saw the fall of the champions that should have been I decided to trust in the only one that has risen again. Sometimes you have to trust the unseen, for the ones that I loved can fly free no more. I want to see my future champions rise not fall, please choose to walk the path of light. God Bless.
In my mind February 2008 Change is coming: or is it?
We sit back and we watch history in the making: a black man winning the nomination for the presidency. This gives all blacks the chance of hope and change. The same as when the great Dr. Martin Luther king marched for change. I feel the energy but I also look at the reality. As a race of people change will only happen when we change as a people, and that’s a long way away. Mentally we are a sad case of people. Barrrack may become president but can he change the years of ignorance that we have created and are still manifest to this day?
Ya-Boy January 1 , 2008
I miss my good friend. People say you don’t know how much someone meant to you until they are gone. I have never been one of those people: death has been a part of my life from an early age and it has been an often occurrence too. I learned at 10 years old to appreciate and cherish those close to you, because I realize more than most that tomorrow is not promised. One of the people that God blessed me with the opportunity to know for a brief period of time is Charles “Chucky” Durr. He meant so much to my growth as a man that I can’t describe it in words. The vision that I live today, that most people feel is ahead of its time, as it relates to personal training, was a vision that he shared with me 13 years ago. Unfortunately, he never got a chance to see it happen for himself before he passed. I hope I am doing his dream justice and he is looking down and happy with how far I have been able to take the “one-stop fitness shop” concept with Ratio 1:1 Fitness and Spa. Charles is directly responsible for many blacks making a living from personal training in Chicago with his trend-setting one-on-one studio “Eye Catchers” before it was even fashionable to be a trainer. Contrary to what people thought about him, with his unselfish attitude, he showed many how to make money and dream big, not only in bodybuilding and personal training, but in life. One of my greatest memories was talking Charles into doing the 1999 North American championship. Charles felt the judges didn’t like him and would never give him a fair placing. I told him the way he was looking he could slap all the judges right before the show and there was no way that he could not win that show. His physique was awesome, one of the best I have ever seen. While he was a few weeks away from the show, I talked the promoter of a local bodybuilding show into letting Charles guest pose at the show. This was not an easy task due to several factors, the promoter was competing in the same show in a few weeks against Charles, and they were the best two bodybuilders from Illinois. They had clashed on stage before and really did not like each other. There were two things that Charles swore he would never do. One was to guest pose in Illinois and the other was that he would never guest pose for free, which is what I was asking him to do. Additionally, he was extremely sick the day before. Needless to say, I faced quite a few challenges in getting him to do this. After he cursed me out for hours over the phone, he did it; and, ‘til this day it was the greatest moment in Illinois bodybuilding history. His archrival even joined him on stage and they posed to “War.” It was unbelievable! Charles went on to win his class at the 1999 North American championship and after the show we talked and laughed. He thanked me for pushing him to do the guest posing and the show and our friendship rose to new heights up until the day he died. There's not a lot of real men out there anymore, not like Charles “Chucky” Durr. I miss his trash talking, his smile, his kicking ass in the gym, and his vision and what he gave to me. I truly miss my good friend.
Rest in Peace October 1 , 2007
I have thought about this subject for the last few years and after meeting and getting to know some of the most successful people in business, sports, politics and entertainment. My mental thesis has been proven correct. Of all people who accomplish extraordinary goals against extraordinary odds, most are severe bi-polar. Several things arise from this, one they are obsessive about their chosen profession and most everything else in their lives. We overdo it or don’t do it at all. People that don’t know they are bi-polar take medication; we use our chosen profession as our medication. The most interesting thing that I have noticed about this type of person, we actually create an alter ego to do our dirty work. The alter ego is totally opposite of the other side of you. Most of this comes from childhood insecurties. We create another person to deal with these inner-demons and to go out and prove to the world and those that said we couldn’t, wrong. Think I am crazy? We even name this alter ego. These alter egos are fearless and there is nothing that they can’t accomplish. Donald trump has “The Donald”, Michael Jordan has “Air Jordan”, Mike Tyson had “Iron Mike”, Shawn Carter has "Jay-Z" or "Jigga", Sean Combs has "Puffy" or "Diddy", Lebron has “King James” and the list goes on and on. Last but not least Earl Bell has “Sir-Earl”. The problem comes into play when you or others do not know how to separate the two. The alter ego goes to work and the first person goes home to the family. “Sir-Earl” has accomplished things that Earl Bell would have never been able to do. A poor kid from the streets to have gone the places I’ve gone and owned the things that I have owned don’t happen to reformed thugs from Englewood too often. But through this journey, I have crossed paths with people who thought they got to know Earl when in reality, they were a part of “Sir-Earls” world. Most people that are driven are perceived to be arrogant, cocky and self-centered. Most of this is true to a certain degree, that’s why we accomplish more than the average. But these labels have been placed on Earl Bell who is the God-fearing Father, who enjoys playing video games with the kids and quite time with the family baking cookies, as opposed to training the superstar clients, lifting big Iron in the gym or trash talking on my site. Most that I come across will never get to know Earl, that’s reserved for family and close friends. These close family and friends will rarely ever see “Sir-Earl” that’s reserve for the cold tough businesses world. Love him or loathe him, that depends on who you got to know. Do you even know Earl Bell or Sir Earl? I could give you examples so you would know, but like they say if you have to ask which one, then you definitely don’t know the Real Earl, neither one. "NEXT LEVEL" EXPRESSIONS VIDEO The Just-Us System We are living in a society now where young Blacks and Hispanics are a hot commodity in the job market. Where, you ask? Wall street, road construction or real estate? Wrong on all the above. The answer is the prison system, and I am not talking about as officers, but as Inmates. They are locking up Blacks and Hispanics at an alarming rate and building prisons faster and larger. Sentences that you used to get probation and a warning on before will get you five years at the drop of a hat. Case in point: Case 1 – A young black male. An honor roll student and star football player. Makes the mistake of giving in to peer pressure and decides to rob a couple of people for the thrill of it, no weapons or physical harm to anybody. He gets caught, no trouble before this incident, no trouble after the incident. Probation or maybe boot camp, nope. Six years in the penitentiary. Does this constitute rehabilitation, he will be locked up with animals for at least the next three years, he must become one just to survive. When he is released who is going to hire a convicted felon. Do you think a young white honor roll football star would be sitting in the pen, not a snowball's chance in hell? Case 2 – A drug dealer gets busted red handed, six kilos of heroin. The police convince him to turn in who is or whom they think at one time was the ringleader. They try to set him up to do a deal and nothing happens. So based on this guy's word alone they raid his home take all his possessions, arrest him and hold him with no bond, for a year and a half. Three years later the trial starts. Based on the testimony of this government witness and very little direct evidence, he is found guilty. Then this guy is handed down one of the longest sentences for such a crime in state history, 44 years in the worst maximum-security prison in this state. You can kill, rape or molest someone and you are at least given a bond and a chance to see freedom at some time in your life, not for being an accused drug dealer though. Where is the justice when just because you are accused, the law can take all that you own and you have to prove you didn’t do it to hopefully get your stuff back .Isn’t that guilty until proven innocent? Case 3 –The feds watch a group of mid-level street dealers for three years without a chance to get a known snitch into their Inner circle. A break; someone outside their circle, but a trusted childhood friend was conveniently set-up by the Informant. This is the same person that the group was on tape stating to stay away from this guy because he’s a snitch. Now a few hours later the trusted friend is on the phone trying to set-up a buy. On the tape you hear, "I can’t do anything with that, no problem I will front it to you, no money down." The entire three years that the feds were listening they never heard this person's voice or involvement in this operation. No problem he is the younger brother of the guy they know is the leader, a prime catch. One problem though, he won’t roll on his brother, no problem we will make you look like the king pin and give you 2 life sentences plus 20 years. I know some that read this will say they were drug dealers and got what they deserved. That could be true, but what about the honor roll football star. My first suggestion is don’t do anything to get yourself put in the system. How is it that so many people that were convicted of horrible crimes like murder and rape twenty years ago are now being found not guilty? Because in this justice system if the police want you to be guilty, you will be guilty. Am I saying these were innocent choir boys? No I am not. I am saying be fair no matter what your color or financial situation may be. Let the punishment fit the crime, no double standards in sentencing. A warning to all my Latinos and Brothers in the struggle, avoid the system. Because when you go seeking justice... That is exactly what you will find, Just Us. Ya-Boy April 1 , 2007 The Price of Success To become a success is something that, at some point and time in our lives, we have at least dreamed about accomplishing. The more you travel this difficult road, the more you will find that when the going gets tough, 98% quit and then start to despise the other 2% that kept going. The biggest problem that I find among my own people is not what was done to us 400 years ago, but what we do to ourselves today. We dare not even dream about a better life; let's blow all our money on clothes, cars and houses we can't afford. Support each other... that's a joke. We walk into a black owned business looking for "the hook-up" and when the owner explains they have bills also, instead of supporting we would rather take our money and business down the street and most of time pay more, just to spite our own brethren. What about those that climb that ladder and achieve success Giving back to help the next. They are as rare as a black man at a clan rally. They will give some advice, maybe. But ask for anything more and they too will go spend their money with the brother from another mother. I constantly hear about sticking together and supporting each other, but rarely is it ever practiced on this difficult road. People that assume you have money because you took one step closer in the walk, sometimes not realizing you are thanking God for making it one more day with food and your lights still on. The price is very high, you will lose spouses, family, and friends along the way. They label you as selfish because you chose not to settle for the same miserable existence that they have chosen. The price is high in not having a life outside of the dream and most things take second place behind the dream. The price is high not knowing from day to day if you will make it a reality or if you will face the dreamers' worst nightmare and have to go get a job. They say It takes twenty years to become an overnight sensation, do you have what it takes "To pay for the price of success?" The Future January 5, 2007 Out with the old and in with the new! During my preparation, thinking about writing this article I felt really down, I thank God that I chose not to write that day. Because within 24 hours I was inspired by what are "Going Out of the Old" comments directed towards me that were fueled by nothing but jealousy and envy. This simple and common occurrence served as an eye-opener by God to show me just how far I have come this year. Although these comments were meant to put me down, they Instead lifted me up and inspired me. I should mention these people by name and thank them, but they know who they are; thanks anyway though. Reflecting on the year 2006 and reviewing my noted goals, all were accomplished. The foundation of success has been laid. Just like building a house, once the hole is dug and the best concrete is poured, the hardest part is completed. Some who lack dreams and vision may drive past and see a concrete hole, but to the owner and the builders, we know the hard part is done. In my life, God is the builder and I am the owner. Thank you Jesus. The goals last year were to strengthen my spiritual and family foundation first, then to focus on the future of fitness; my dream Ratio 1:1 Fitness and Spa. I want to thank my client, friend and pastor Reverend James Meeks; I thought I had a lot of haters towards me until I got to know him. Just being around him showed me how to utilize God's gift and still not take any mess off anybody. He has never spoke with me on these matters, just his everyday actions are the best teacher. To my Fiancé, we have been through the storm, we are not where we want to be, but we are a lot further then where we were, thanks for sticking by and believing in me, I love you for that. My son Cameron, your existence stabilizes my hectic world. To guide you in your life journey towards being a great young man is the reason that I awake everyday, I love you more than words can explain. My mom, it is Impossible to ever repay or thank you enough for all the love and support you have given me my entire life, but I will tell you this, "taking mother's love to the next level," should be your moto. Melenie my second mom, what can I say, you are a true blessing from God. Who would have ever thought a person coming in to sign up for personal training 6 or 7 years ago, would have led to this. There has never been a time that I needed you and you were not there, ever. Thanks seems to be so insignificant for what you have done, for not only me, but also my family. Bibi, the time that I have known you has been brief, but you have done so much to help. You truly have a heart of gold, I thank you. The Ratio 1:1 staff - Alyssa, Shawn and Cieara, you guys make coming to work and chasing this dream fun everyday. You have sacrificed and have been through the tough times and I thank you for being there for Chie and me. 2007 will surely see your hard work payoff. When I look at all these blessings bestowed upon a kid from the streets of Englewood - who was never supposed to live past 21 - I know that there is a God. So why would I let comments made by a guy with a bad toupee, and one with a high butt, and the wannabees that round out their clique dampen my spirit. What I will do is say a prayer that maybe they too can be blessed as much as the one called “Sir Earl". Everyone have a great and blessed year. The Future October 15 , 2006 My Brother's Keeper Growing older and experiencing a lot of things makes me ask the question. Am I my brother’s keeper? In a scene from "New Jack City" with Wesley Snipes when he found out “G Money” betrayed him. When Nino is about to do what I feel should happen to those close to you that dare betray you, G Money realizing the end is near, begs Nino “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Shouting louder the next time “Am I my brother's Keeper?" With tears in his eyes Nino pulls the trigger and says "Yes I am," - the end of G Money. To keep that oath you would have never been on your knees asking that question. Why are men of today not like men of yesteryear, where your word was your bond, your oath and your everything? Today people; men and women alike, throw around their word like a boomerang, it’s a joke. I have had men promise me things, given me their word and when I take them at their word, all of a sudden they can not be found. Some men these days should be wearing skirts, they act like little girls. How are you going to tell me to call you and then all of a sudden you are not answering a phone that I know you always answer, any other time. Be a man and pick up the phone and say I thought I could do it, but now I realize I can’t, wimp. I am not saying I have never promised something that I thought I could deliver and couldn’t, but I will never avoid a call and I will let you know that I can’t do it. The reason that we as blacks can’t get ahead is because as men we are not our brothers keeper, our word and dedication to our fellow man means nothing. Growing up in Englewood, there was one thing I learned very quickly and that is in the hood, they honor their word. Someone has a beef with you and says I better not catch you on this block, you know they meant that. This gave you two choices either do not go on that block or go on the block and deal with the consequences. One thing's for sure, there were going to be consequences, because they gave you their word. Now everybody is watching and if you didn’t follow through on your word, everybody would then start to test your manhood. I have had friends that when we were running the streets together, would have laid down their life because they gave me their word. I would have done the same for them. This was the cloth from which I was cut, so when I deal with these guys in today’s era and they B.S. you right to your face, I understand how Nino felt on the roof. Where have all the real men gone? Who has the answer to the question? Are you truly my brother’s keeper? Stand up. To my brothers July 12, 2006 Where Did They Go? When I speak with my son Cameron about friends, I am always reminded about the true meaning of friends. When I look back on my life or that of most men I realize and appreciate the long standing friendships with other males that you build. Men are taught and raised to go out and make a family, life and a name for you. Most of the time we go it alone or if you are truly lucky you find that one male friend that you keep for a lifetime. My homeboy is Tony we met in the fourth grade and have been friends every since. We do not talk but maybe ten minutes every other month but that is all most men need, if you find two male friends that talk all the time like women do, there is something wrong. I am godfather to Tony’s son Devon, he is godfather to my oldest son and daughter Earl and Terita, and he also stood as the best man at my wedding. We have been through the best and worst of times but still can say we are true friends, I would be there in a heartbeat if he needed me. This story came to mind because my son Cameron felt that everybody that he knew in school or hung around with he could call a friend. I explained to him and he is starting to see that those who start on life’s journey as friends don’t end up that way. I ran across this picture This next picture I found was a time in my life that I was getting started in bodybuilding and this was my crew. Me with the vision, Ken with the life’s knowledge and resources, Steve the loyal up and coming bodybuilder and Marlin was the hottest bodybuilder in the state at the time. Ya-Boy “Sir-Earl”April 15, 2006 The Front Row The last two weeks of March and the first week of April, I have attended three separate funerals of close friends or clients of mine. These types of times do two things for me. First, they remind me to give thanks to God and appreciate everyday, because neither our loved ones nor we are not promised tomorrow. Secondly as I pass that front row of the church where the immediate family sits to offer my condolences, I am reminded of the pain and numbness they feel at that moment and the difficult days following. I have been in that front row more times than I would care to be. If you have too, you will understand the things that I'm about to say. For those who have not sat in that front row, thank God, but keep living and you will. Death and taxes are two certainties in this life. Whether it was an expected death due to old age, a long fought Illness or as sudden as just talking to the person a few hours before and now they are gone. The steps that occur and the pain and emptiness are the same. First, you get the news and your heart drops to your toes and you can’t breathe. Imagine the paralyzing jolt of a thoroughbred horse kicking you in the chest, that does not even come close to this pain. For days you wander around in a fog, mad at the world because you are dying inside but they have no idea of your loss and their lives go on as usual. You try to make sense of it but you can’t, planning the funeral and remembering the happy times temporarily eases the pain and keeps you distracted. You tell yourself it will be okay, all the while you cry uncontrollably almost non-stop. The funeral draws closer and you still can not accept the reality that your loved one is gone. While seated on the front row you accept the condolences, hugs and encouraging words from all the well wishers, but nothing said eases the heart wrenching pain. The funeral goes past at warp speed and now comes the burial. When the first hand of dirt is placed on that coffin the reality begins to hit home that this person is never coming back. This was not just a bad dream that you can awaken from, this is real. When you finally get to lay down your aching head that night and the dehydration from all the tears you cried sat in, you realize this was only the first day. You have to figure out how you are going to live the rest of your life without that person that you thought would always be there. This is a just a small brief glimpse of life on the front row. To the ones that have lost January 1, 2006 Can't We All Just Get Along? Why can’t we just all get along? These were words made famous by Rodney King. But since I've been in business, this is a question that I ask more and more. It seems that blacks will never be able to pull together as a race and support each other. Why is it that whenever someone steps into Ratio 1:1,they ask about a hook-up before they even ask the price or what services we provide. Do you go to Jewels and try to negotiate the price of a gallon of milk? When you refuse to bargain your prices instead of supporting your business they will go down the street and pay the same or more money for the same service, just to spite you. We as a race purchase enough Nike, Fubu and Pelle Pelle to own a part of the company, but if you talk about investing or saving money, they look at you like you're an alien. The killer to me is when you do hire somebody, they feel as if they're doing you a favor. Showing up late, baby mama and daddy drama, wanting to leave work early any chance they get, God forbid if you ask them to work overtime. After you get the head twist and eye roll, they think you are plotting against them from getting their hair and nails did. But come pay day they complain they do not make enough money and want a raise. My personal experience has been that I hire trainers that I've found crying on the kitchen table for being out of work so long, just got fired from accounting, or fresh out of jail and can't get into personal training. I give them a job and teach them what they need to know to be successful in this field. Six months to a year later they start to count my money and feel they should own half my business, without putting in any money. They feel that just their everyday presence, which is what they were hired to do, should account for them helping me, not the other way around. This is similar to a singing group where each person has different talents but then the background singers want to be the lead singer, when they do not have the talent to do the job. Instead of using their respective talents to become a great long lasting group, they quit or get fired from the group. Then they bitch about how wrong the group was for getting rid of them. Then the lead singer goes on to a great solo career or get members that want to play their role and continues to be successful. R. Kelly, Public Announcement and Destiny’s Child are just a few examples. Everyday, as I see the Ratio rejects in the trainer's graveyard, inside I smile realizing what great career they missed out on. But sometimes it makes me ponder the question why, can’t we just all get along. Ya-Boy November 28, 2005 Where I'm From I ran into a guy that I grew up in my old “hood” with. We discussed briefly how we both were doing and what was going on in our lives presently. The topic soon turned into how all the guys in the old “hood” were doing. He began to run down the list, "Special K" has not been seen or heard from in over ten years, most likely dead and buried, remains never to be found. His brother “E Dog" doing 25 years to life in the state penitentiary for attempted murder. How about their cousin "China" got out after doing fours years, strung out on drugs and hiding from the local drug boys, and will be dead as soon as they see him. What about “G Wag" and his brother "Ty", both doing time in the pen and strung out also. "Money Mike" paralyzed from being shot, "Lil Greg" paralyzed from being hit in the back of the head with a baseball bat. I asked what about Walt and his little brother, both found executed a few years ago. Darryl doing eight years in Statesville penitentiary and his brother has been missing for years (presumed dead). Both his sisters are prostitutes and strung out on drugs. How is "Cook" doing? She died from aids several years ago. What about her three sisters, they were so fine when we were growing up, all hookers and strung out. This was maybe a five or ten minute conversation. Listening to this conversation, a person would think that we were talking about all of Englewood. No, this was just a two or three block radius. Most came from my block and these were most of the same guys that I ran with. Chie was present and she could not believe what her ears were hearing, although I have always let her in on the type of environment that I grew up in. I guess hearing it from a neutral party really brought reality home to her. When we were driving away she asked me about this guy and I informed her that he, himself had been shot five times. Chie asked the same question most people ask. How did you mange to live most of your life in such a hostile environment? My reply is that this was all so normal to us growing up. That it did not seem out of the ordinary to anyone that came from my hood. What this does is reiterates to me what I figured out years ago. That God has a higher purpose for me. Because on any of the days that I was out doing the same dirt that most of these people were doing, it could have easily been me being written about, instead of me being the one doing the writing. God
Bless September 30, 2005 On The Grind The term “On the grind” is a term used by the street hustlers who use the phrase to communicate to fellow street hustlers who are on the grind or chasing that all mighty dollar. There are a lot of terms that relate to the same thing “Bring home the bacon,” “Making the doughnuts,” "getting paper," and "paying the bills." I have always preferred just plain old “taking it to the Next Level”. What ever your saying may be, to those that are on some kind of grind or hustle legally or illegally, know and respect what it is that you are striving for. We all know the sacrifices because we have been and probably are still there. The everyday hustle and grind of trying to make it in life is something that cannot be faked. This grind is like a private fraternity and you know a fellow member when you speak to them, we can’t be fooled so don’t even try it. Whatever your hustle might be; real estate, personal training, selling clothes, making music or just working a job with a side hustle. making your money work for you, dreaming to be bigger than the average Joe and never giving up on your dreams and goals will get you in this club. Remember this true hustle can’t be faked. This piece was written to recognize and pay respect to some of those close to me that are keeping me motivated to keep pushing to “the next level”. 1. Rev. Meeks - Starting with a little store front church. Rev. Meeks built a $50 million, 10,000 seat mega church. The 3rd largest church in the country, and it is full every Sunday. Now that is a hustle for God, the best kind of hustle. 2. Melanie Whitaker - My second mom, walked away from a secure government job of 37 years to pursue her dream of building a successful real estate company with her sons. Things were rough in the beginning, but they are getting it straight now. The important thing here is they are doing it as a family, something very uncommon to our race of people, keep striving mom. 3. Chilli & Lupe Fiasco - My homeys from that FNF crew, 1st and 15th up. Charles told me three years ago that in two years his record label would be the hottest thing from the Chi. Well it took them three years, only because Charles was locked up for fourteen months on a B.S. charge. But true to Hustler form, Charles signed a four million dollar label deal with Atlantic records on a collect phone call from jail . . . What can you say? 4.Sal Alvarez -The designer of this web-site, we met Linda and Sal on their way to a tent sale in the parking lot of Value City furniture. Sal did not want to come into Ratio 1:1 but Linda, his wife insisted. True to husband form and not wanting to hear your wife nag, they came in and we have been good friends ever since. Sal’s skills as a web site designer go beyond the norm. He is a visionary and creates works of art that are viewed as web sites. These unique skills, and his relentless hustle ability has allowed him to expand from designing little web-sites to huge projects. This type of grind will assure him of becoming a multi-millionaire very soon. Lesson number 1, always listen to your wife. 5.Sir Earl and the Ratio 1:1 crew - Last but not least, me and my peeps, I have to give props to the people that are in the day-to-day grind to help me accomplish this huge dream that I have been chasing the last fifteen years. When Ratio 1:1, due to legal complications left south Holland, the word was we were done, but we doubled in size and moved to Calumet City. In Calumet City due to the back stabbing tactics of a true hater, I had an eviction notice placed on the door and was locked out of my dream for a week. "He has to be done this time." they all said. But Ratio 1:1 grew to four times that size, added a day spa, and a second gym opening in 2006. That’s called being on the grind for real. I have a new found respect for those that have reached Millionaire status and even more respect for those that have reached Multi-millionaire status. One little zero added to a series of numbers increases your workload and stress level ten fold. These are the reasons that among my people, this is a very small and elite club. We do not only intend to join this multi-millionaires club but we are going to rewrite the book and raise it to “The Next Level”. Keep Dreaming June 25, 2005 The State of Personal Training What is going on with these new jack personal trainers of today? They pay $300.00 for a book and a weekend course and feel they have earned the right to call themselves a trainer. They see me and talk to me, as if we are on the same level, Not. I have earned the right to call myself a professional personal trainer. I have fifteen years of sweat in the trenches, I am from the old school of what personal training should be. Sometimes I meet a trainer and they ask me what is my other job, the reason being only 5 out 25 trainers can make a full time living from this profession. Out of that 5, maybe 2 make a decent living. Out of that 2 only 1 is good enough where their methods create an excess overflow of clients that they need to open their own facility and hire more trainers to accommodate. I am in that class and have been for the last eight years. These new jack trainers come along thinking they are going to reinvent the wheel, they have all these new Ideas and methods that have only been practiced in their book. They speak to clients in a language that you need to have a doctrines degree to understand. They talk about latimus dorsi, gluteus maximums and pectoral major, the only thing the client wants to know is "How long is it going to take me to lose this gut so I can get in this dress?" A current trend I see now is new jack trainers working out with their clients, do they need a trainer or a training partner? Here is a bit of advice for you new jacks . . . You cannot train an overweight client like you do a power lifter or a football player. They will look like how you construct their workout. They need to lose weight not tackle somebody. I have a little more advice; a diet plan should not be written on the back of a napkin, or you should not be telling your client, just make sure you eat the right foods. While I am on the subject. I have some questions: 1. Do you have to scream at your clients? 2. You set their appointment, why can’t you be on time? 3. Is that cell phone call so important that you have to talk while training your client? 4. Is it 1-on-1 training or 5-on-1? 5. Why is your client in better shape than you? 6. Why do you talk more about your body, than your client talks about theirs? 7. I do not think your client should look worse every month, but I could be wrong. 8. Why does your picture need to be on the front of all your cards? I wish more new jack trainers would see the beauty of helping others accomplish their goals, and not see a way to charge a lot of money and give nothing back to the client. Learn from those that have been at it longer than you, they have lasted this long for a reason, that's the advice I give to up and coming trainers that I consider hiring. There is a reason why you are sitting on the other side of the desk asking me for a job. What you think you know has not earned you enough money to be at my level, what I know has earned me enough money to feed my family for the last fifteen years. Who do you think I am going to listen to, me or you and your book? Future-of-Fitness May 19, 2005 Windows To Your Soul When you are alone, when you have to take a real hard look at yourself, when you stare into the Mirror, what stares back at you? They say eyes are windows to your soul. We can lie to people around us and sometimes in public we can even lie to ourselves. But deep in our hearts, deep in our souls, when we stare deep into our eyes or should I say deep into our souls, there is no lying. Inside we know what fears we have. We may never mention them to anyone else, but the eyes and soul never lie. Do you ever wonder why some people make it and others do not? The secret is not what you are running to, but what you are running from. Some people, myself included, get up every day and run from something. The fear is what drives champions, we fear where we came from more than where we are going. The unknown of where some people are going terrifies them, they make excuses for why they shouldn’t go forward, they lie to themselves and others, but when they look into their eyes they know the truth. These people try to mask the truth with alcohol, drugs, material possessions, sometimes trying to not see into their eyes, but it never works. Have you ever known someone that got beat up as a kid, moves to a different state where no one knows them and all of a sudden they become Billy Badass. Who are you? What are your fears? Do you have the guts to search your soul for the answer? Probably not. Someone once told me they wish they had the strength that I have to accomplish the things that I do. I told this person you fear going forward more than backwards. This person's parents were from a rich upbringing in South Beach, Florida to be exact. My thinking is "What is the worst thing that can happen if you do not make it, and you have to go back home to mama?" South Beach ain’t that bad. Now, Englewood on the other hand is some place I would never want to go back to, but the good news is I made it through once, I can do it again. People that succeed never give up; they never stop going forward, they know not what lies ahead, but it damn sure cannot be as bad as what is behind. I Love watching the Rocky movies, they really motivate me. When my business was closed, when I got rejected and was told no about loans, when people talk behind my back and ridicule me, when it appears to outside people that I failed or backed out of a show, when people told me from day one I would never make it as a trainer, I think of a line that Rocky says to his wife before he goes to fight the Russian. Rocky says "We have to look in the mirror, I am a fighter, that is what you married, it is what fighters do, It’s not for the fame or the money, it is who we are; fighters." Then he thinks about the Russian like I think about life, "Yes he is stronger and bigger and a killer. But in order for him to defeat me he has to kill me, and in order for him to kill me he has to stand toe to toe with me, and to do that he has to be willing to die himself, and I am not sure he is willing to do that. I may not be able to defeat him so all I can do is take everything that he has and see if he can take some of what I got to give." These words may not be verbatim, but you all know what I mean. So to all those that talk about Sir Earl, remember, you can never measure a man’s heart and determination. I have come too far; I can’t go back, I refuse to lose. That is what I see through my eyes in the darkest times - when I am alone. What about you? What do you see? Future-of-Fitness March 10, 2005 The Great Wall I can remember the first time walking down the Corridors of quads Gym and seeing the Pictures of all the Great Bodybuilders, Powerlifters, Professional athletes and Pro Wrestlers that walked those same corridors before me. I thought to myself, "This is where I must need to train if I want to reach that Level and someday have my picture on that wall." The motivation that comes from seeing the greats is incredible. You have Quads' favorite son, the best power lifter ever, Ed Coan, the Steiner brothers pro Wrestlers, the Smith brothers, Tim and Brian, winners of the Jr. America and the Jr. U.S.A. John Larieu, Mr. Universe, Chuck Durr, Mr. U.S.A. and Pete Miller, Mr. America, just to name a few. Not only did these guys win major shows, but most went on to build a business from their chosen sport. The reason I write this story is that those days are long gone. First, the pictures no longer sit in the corridor, they are now located in the actual gym. Courtesy of the new owner. Secondly, what once was a standard is now a joke. Instead of winning a major title to feel your picture deserved to be up there, guys and women find the weakest show, place 1st out of one in their class, and before the glue is dry on their ten dollar trophy they have already had a 8x10 glossy made up and ready to go. Lying to anyone that will listen about how they "slayed" the competition, failing to mention that they were the only one in their class and possibly in the whole show, and that’s how that got the overall trophy. Imagine back in the days of guys sweating for hours in the gym and dieting for months to do battle with the best this state had to offer to earn the right to put up their picture. That Joe, Elliot and Pam would not diet, enter a show, get third place out of three people and have the right to place their pictures on the wall. What a joke. I was once asked why my pictures were not on the wall. I feel you must beat the best to be considered the best. That does not include running to other states to compete, only entering novice level shows or Picking shows based on knowing there will be weak competition there. Although I have won an overall title, I am proudest of the 5th place trophy I received from the Powerhouse classic. The Competition at the show was the best, there were guys that won State and Regional titles that did not place at that show. I still dream of the day that my picture will sit next to the greats, but it will only go up after defeating the best of the best, not the way it is being done today. I am still old school with certain traditions. Future-of-Fitness January 21, 2005 What Is "Sir Earl's World?" When people hear the name of my web site their first response is sometimes a smirk, but most of the time it is a look like who would call something their world. People sometimes view this as an arrogant statement. I personally think they are mad because they did not think of it first or they lack the guts to put it out there like that, not me. Like everything else that I do, I wanted this site to be Unforgettable in Name and Uniqueness - So far, Mission Accomplished. The whole Idea behind my site was to find a way to invite readers into my world. We all have our own Little world that we live in, I just wanted to bring mine to light and Share with Others in the Hopes that something that I have been threw Past, Present or Future can maybe help someone that find themselves in a Similar situation. Also it is therapeutic for me, To Release Mentally. I feel that if there is a such thing as the American dream, then I am the ghetto American dream. My situation of growing up the way I did. Having a child by age 14, running the streets, in and out of jail is not unique where I come from. The sad thing is it’s actually Everyday Normality. That is why they call it the ghetto; it is a place that is full of hopelessness for any future. They cannot see past today and they live their lives in this manner. We were once talking with one of my Sister's friend and she felt that the stories that were being told by us and people like us were being greatly exaggerated, because she is from her own world. Growing up, I Could not have a conversation about mom and dad being happy at home, not my world. I could not talk about what it was like to go to Prom or attended college, not my world. But If you asked what hearing gun shots most days was like, or Knowing that you or some of your friends would not live to see late twenties were like, Or your biggest goal was making it to see the next day was like or what Jail life was like, then we could talk. I always had and will always have someone to talk to because as I said earlier “Sir Earls” Story is not unique. Now I know some clown reading this will say, well why didn’t you just not do those things and you would have been okay, my Response; you were not from my world. Some things are by choice, some are by design, either way you still have to deal with them. That was then and this is now. These days my world is filled with dreaming of getting to the top and being a great role model for my kids. The Journeys that now shape my world are just starting, and I love it. The Paths that I have taken thus far has led me to some Places that I could have never dreamed of as a kid. The people that I have been fortunate to meet has been the best, some good some bad but great non the less. People that stand out in my journeys as a Bodybuilder/ Businessman are; seven time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman, Eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney, My main man Shawn Ray, my boy Vince Taylor. Meeting Joe Weider was truly an Honor. The one thing that these people and the others that I will mention have in common is that they are the best at what they do. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., U.S Senator Barrack O’bama and the Reverend Senator James Meeks. People like Bonnie Deshung and Boolu Master from Radio. The late Tom Milonvich from Quads Gym and Cornell from Naturally fit Truly Shaped my way of thinking in the Industry. I witnessed my neighbor in University park, Al Mccowan, dream about becoming mayor of that town and now his dream is a reality. These are things that people outside looking in will never understand, but for a kid from the streets of the Low end, these are dreams come true. Trying to name all the names and Places that Sir Earls World has taken him would be Impossible, but I hope You Get The Picture. Well Even if you don’t, the fact that you are reading this should tell you, that you have already been Submerged In Sir Earl’s World. Future-of-Fitness December 7, 2004 Not Promised Tomorrow The past year has been a very trying time for me. Throughout my life it seems that the ones closes to me have past away at a time that our relationships were starting to grow. I understand that this a natural part of life and everyone goes threw this pain. When I was younger the losses of loved ones angered me and always made me ask the questions why me. I guess with age comes wisdom and a clearer understanding, now these losses help me to grow closer to the ones that are still alive and appreciate, respect and make those that are gone proud of me.Below are just a few of those people whose memory I will always cherish. The impact on my life cannot not be describe in words: Great-grandmother (tea) & grandmother (mama Dorothy) these two women raised me, my brother, 2 sisters and my 2 cousins from the time we were babies until 9 or 10years later. Three adults and 6 kids raised on a social security and an aid check, in a small rundown 2 bedroom apartment in Englewood. Not a lot of material possessions or extra food, but a world of love and family closeness that today's society desperately needs. Shelton -was my best friend in 3rd grade, his inner struggles at that age was that of someone much older. He trusted me with a secret that he was running away to live with his father; he made me promise not to tell anyone not even his mom. He hopped a freight train behind our school, he made it to Memphis where his father lived, but didn't factor in the cold weather and froze to death. Although I was questioned the same day by his mom, police, teachers and so forth, I kept our secret and I feel this decision contributed to his death. I still struggle with that to this day. Alondo Franks- anyone that has ever read my web site knows that alondo or "doeknob" as he was referred to, was my best friend/cousin and probably one of the greatest and funniest people I ever knew. He died in a drowning accident 4 weeks before he was to be the best man at my wedding. His death rocked my world and changed my life forever. I weep as I write this article because the pain feels as if was yesterday. I miss him so much. Lanny-my bowling and pool playing partner when I was younger. He was the big brother that I never had, he stood up in my wedding but died from a brain aneurysm shortly after, he was only thirty-one at the time. I wish he were here to see what I have become. He would be so proud. Bill Robinson-my stepfather died in a car accident in 1996. he did his best to teach a city boy to fish and enjoy outdoor activities, although I never got it. I truly appreciate the effort and love he showed my mom and me. Tom Milonvich-the former owner of quads gym pasted away last year from heart complications. His love for the gym business has resulted in no less than 8 former members of quads opening their own gyms, mine included. His vision changed an industry in Illinois. He helped me a lot in my hard times and I will be forever grateful to him for that.
These losses I discuss are no longer sad occasions that bring forth happy memories. To all of you remember those that we lost, but appreciate those we still have. "Sir Earl" February 02, 2004 Pencil Neck Geeks This is a subject that has irritated me for as long as I have been involved in bodybuilding – that's 13 years. Here's the scene: you have a 6'0 tall 150 lb. pencil-neck geek, benching 85 lbs. with the sloppiest form known to mankind. Instead of paying attention to his own pathetic workout, he is looking over at a 5'6, 230 lbs. ripped bodybuilder, benching 405 lbs. or squatting 550 lbs. He's training to the brink of throwing up his chicken breast and broccoli lunch, and this clown's only comment is "If I took the amount of steroids he takes, I would look like that also." This scene is played out time and time again throughout most gyms around the country, day-in and day-out. The work, dedication and consistency required to obtain even a decent body is way too much for 90of people to endure. When you step into the realm of high-level amateur and pro sports competition, that number decreases, which means maybe 1 or 2actually have what it takes. First you must be born with God-given genetics to be the best at what you do. There is an old saying in bodybuilding, "steroids can never turn a Chihuahua into a Great Dane." Either you got it or you don't. If you just happen to be a person born with skinny legs, narrow shoulders and wide hips with no work ethic, do not blame steroids, blame your parents! There is an investigation into the trainer of Barry Bonds, the greatest hitter ever known to baseball, to see if the trainer supplied Bonds with anabolic steroids. People in the league are starting to say that steroids are why he hit so many home-runs. There are football players, track runners, bodybuilders and gymnasts that probably takes ten times the amount that they say that Bonds has taken. None of these people can hit a major league pitch past their big toe, so is it drugs? Get real. The moral of this story is give people who have excelled in their chosen sports the respect they deserve for being consistent, dedicated and focused on being the best that they can be. I sometimes run into people who saw me when I first started working out at 154lbs. Now, some 85 to 90 lbs. of muscle later, they usually make two comments. The first is, "man you got huge." The second is "I wish I had stuck with it." What these people don't understand is that math. Here we go stick with me. I gained 86 lbs. in 13 years, that's an average of 6.6 lbs. per year. Plus, years of eating bland steak, egg whites, chicken, fish and protein shakes until I couldn't stand the sight of them anymore. Training day-in and day-out in 110-degree heat with no AC, traveling to the gym in rain and snow storms, not to mention the arguments with the spouse because you'd rather go to the gym than go to the movies with them. You have so many aching joints and body parts that you can hardly sleep at night. For 13 years of this life, I get a whopping 1.8 lbs. of muscle per month if I'm lucky! But this same clown working out with weights my grandmother could lift, thinks that the results I've achieved must have come in a bottle and syringe. Why did I ever take the easy 13-year route I chose? I could have taken a lesson from the geek and spent a lifetime being the "before" picture instead of the "after." Keep working hard my fellow gym rats, we know the truth. "Sir Earl" November 22, 2003 When They Doubt You Although I normally attend the Mr. Olympia every year, I decided to not go this year. I figured it would be the same old B.S. Ronnie would not be in shape, but would win no matter what. Boy was I wrong! Ronnie Coleman showed up at 287 pounds (30 pounds more than last year) to win his sixth consecutive Mr. Olympia title. What made this win more spectacular than winning his first title (which was a 100 to 1 long shot) was that for the past two years, he has not been at his best. And yet he still won the title. Last year Ronnie lost to Gunther at a show called "The Show of Strength." The whole bodybuilding world predicted his career as Mr. Olympia was over. But what most people failed to measure was the size of his heart and his willingness to never give into defeat. Was it Ronnie’s physique that impressed me this year? No, it was his desire to prevail when everyone else doubted him. Against all odds, he pulled something from within that he didn’t even know was there. We all face obstacles in our lives. What do you do when those times are present in your life? Do you seek pity from those around you, feel sorry for yourself and quit, or do you follow the examples of a true champion and fall to your knees and pray? Strap up your chinstrap and go for what’s in your heart! I hope you choose the latter. If so, you are in a unique group because only a small percentage has what it takes deep inside to win against the odds. Ronnie is part of a system that glorifies you when you do well and crucifies you when things don’t go so well. Is this system bodybuilding or is it life? The answer is that it’s both. I have learned over the years how it works and just recently got an even bigger lesson in both. Bodybuilding punished Ronnie at the "Show of Strength" by not rewarding him with the placing that he deserved. Gunther did not deserve to win over Ronnie Coleman but the system has that kind of control. But what Ronnie had to do was put it in God’s hands and handle his job in the gym. Although the system would have loved to see a new Mr. Olympia this year, Ronnie removed the system by showing up in such a way that it could not take the title from him. This is what we, as champions must aspire to duplicate. If you wanted that position and work and didn’t get it, or if you wanted to achieve a goal and fell short, or if you didn’t get that placing at a show, don’t get mad -- get even! Train your mind and body in such a way that the system has no choice but to acknowledge you as the winner. It didn’t have a choice. September 29, 2003 Dreamers The one human being that is most misunderstood is the dreamer. The only person that can relate to a dreamer is a bigger dreamer. When I say a dreamer, I’m not speaking of those who sleep. I am talking of those who are wide awake. I am referring to the one’s who look at a lemon and not only see lemonade, but a worldwide lemonade distribution operation! Terms like “selfish,” “money hungry,” “conceited” and “not normal” are often thrown at the dreamer by those who dare not dream for fear of exposing their own inner weakness of self doubt. This only fuels the dreamers desire to go to the next level. Every time we are told we can’t, we then must. Dreamers come in all shapes, sizes, colors, genders and ethnic groups. The one common bond they share is their ability to keep going no matter how difficult the task. They will keep striving until completion or death. To all my dreamers, when they say you can’t, you do. Then hire and inspire those that doubted you. “Sir Earl” August 18, 2003 What a difference a year makes What a difference a year makes. Just a year ago, I did not know from day to day how I would provide food for my family, when my car would be repossesed or if the sheriff’s were going to throw me out of my life-long dream -- my club Ratio 1:1. This saga actually began two years earlier. I was at the top of my game. I successfully built from nothing two personal training clubs, a lucrative contract for training with the Chicago School system, a body-building show, doing pro body-building seminars with the sports elite like five-time Mr. Olympia, Ronnie Coleman and Shawn Ray. Not to mention my own website, plans to design my own work-out clothing line and get more of the same --- contracts, studios and the purchase of my ultimate dream, Quads gym. I was within months taking the next step, which would have placed my company in the seven-figure bracket, but then things began to crumble. A lot had to do with my losing sight of the basics and starting to believe success just came with waking up in the morning. All things happen for a reason, the lessons I learned made me a much better person and definitely a better business person. It also taught me who to trust. Those who I thought to be friends began to show their true colors. The vicious lies, the jealousy, back-stabbing and deceit happened at a time when fortunately, I was too busy trying to survive to really pay any attention to it. To this day, a year later, I continue to hear things this clown has said, and now I am mature enough that it truly makes me laugh on one hand, and feel sorry for him on the other hand. He could have had it all by being loyal. The decisions made out of pure jealousy have condemned you to a life of no respect in your field, trying to steal others clients and training deadbeats for chump change! Through the grace of God most of my original vision has turned out to be a reality -- a club that now trains the biggest names in radio, pro football, entertainment, boxing, politics, music and t.v. Ratio has a new crew that’s totally committed to being No. 1 at what we do, and we’ve added a state-of-the-art massage therapy room that is second to none. With our future expansion, we will be a force to be reckoned with in the personal training field. In closing, I can only thank God and say I’m not where I want to be, but I am damned glad I’m not where I used to be. What a difference a year makes. "Sir Earl" June 9,2003 The Day After The day after the big dance, the names may change but the game remains the same. Whether it is the Olympia, Illinois State or the Mr. Backyards Bodybuilding Show, the following day is as interesting as the day itself. Actually it starts after the pre-judging in the morning. You begin to realize where you will probably place at. If it's good, your motivation level is sky high, if it is not where you wanted, you begin to look forward to the next show. When the show is over, all the foods you have denied yourself for 3 or 4 months are targeted out. Pizza, burgers, ice cream, pie, cakes, Mom's favorite dish, but number one on the list is the all boring beverage, water and lots of it. When you finally arrive home and jump into the shower as you watch all the oil and dye rinse down the drain, you can't help but to smile to yourself because no matter win, lose or draw, you walked the walk that a lot of people only dream about. The bright lights and big stage, you were there for the battle. The next morning you awake with aches and pains you never imagined and you begin to try and adjust back to normal life. Opening the mail and returning calls that have been put off for weeks. Washing clothes that are something other than your gym rags. Eating a meal with the family that has waited so patiently. While all the time you prepared 3 or 4 months you looked forward to this day, now the adrenaline starts to fade and as you explain what when wrong or what went right, you secretly start to plot that next show. You ask yourself when will it be? What do I need to work on? Let me get my diet back on track, I can't wait to get back in the gym. All these thoughts go though your head, not even 24 hours after the show. Not to mention the 3 to 4 months of living hell the call a diet. You dare not mention these thoughts to your spouse or significant other, because they barely made it through this show. Your mood swings, not being a part of any outside social activities, the arguments and the disappointments that hurt them as much as you, when things don't go as you envisioned them, but as you and the family eat that breakfast you have not had in months, these thoughts are what you feel the day after. Keep Striving "Sir Earl" March 26, 2003 The State Of Bodybuilding The Illinois bodybuilding season will officially kick off on March 29th, 2003 at Lane Tech High School. Another year of local wannabee's entering competitions with low turn-outs that allow for easy victories and un-deserved bragging rights about being Mr. Or Miss "So and So". Meanwhile they will take their $20 trophy and sit it on the mantel and lie about how they slayed hundreds of competitors when in reality it was only a few. I guess I'm a throwback to the old school days of bodybuilding, where when you won a title you earned it because to get it, you went through a war. When you entered a show and guys like John Larue, Chuck Sanow, Pete Miller, Chuck Durr, Brian Smith, Jeff Galdean, Rick Turk, Brian Glenn and Andy Brychey were all there it was no cakewalk, it was a true battle. The quality of shows were so good that after you won a local title, you had what it took to go on to the Jr. National or National level and actually be competitive. I believe that the responsibility of representing your state as Illinois bodybuilding champions should include some type of state sponsorship to go and compete at higher levels. But also more importantly, these individuals should go out into the public eye and visit high schools, grammar schools, speak to the press and make special appearances to promote their titles as well as health and fitness as a lifestyle. Sir Earl February 13, 2003 How are you doing? This question has been asked about me and my life more and more these days. Either directly to me or though sources close to me so the message is certain to get back my way. My reply is that I am blessed. How do you think I'm doing? Did youreally think that spreading lies and praying for my downfall would work? I have only been going through that kind of drama my entire life! Ha!!! Try something a little more original. Did the people who sought to destroy me by distancing themselves from the vision and the dream think I would stop dreaming and striving? Please don't make me laugh. That move only exposed just how much I carried you. Now your veil has been lifted to expose what the truth was all along. How is Ratio 1:1 doing? Take a ride past 159th street and you'll see a packed parking lot, the new crew, the positive atmosphere and the advertisement that is constantly in your face. The answer to that question is Ratio 1:1 is blessed also. In closing I will say that the stories of my demise have been greatly exaggerated but thanks for asking how I am doing. I am fine. The question is how are YOU doing? SIR EARL November 21, 2002 When I grow up Rewind back to November 1st 1990 when I stepped into a small fitness center in Park Forest, IL, called Bob's Gym. The dream began. I slowly worked my way through the ranks of Illinois bodybuilding's inner circle. Fast forward to the present. Along this journey I have met and tried to emulate particular aspects of certain people that I have befriended. This article is all about when I grow up, who do I want to be like? These strong points of different people grouped together are a listing of what I strive to be in life. It covers my aspirations in family, business and bodybuilding. Cornell McCullough, owner of Naturally Fit: I want his inner peace, his humbleness, his realness, and his business savvy. Tom Minovich, owner of Quads Gym: I want his sincerity in how he tries to help everyone he comes in contact with, also his 20 years of consistency in such an unstable business. Jeff Johnson, owner of Flex Gym, Ottawa, IL: I would like to have his promotional instincts, when it comes to bodybuilding contests; also his love and devotion to his wife and kids. These next four are a combination of what I would want my bodybuilding career to represent. The consistency of Chuck Sanow, the genetic structure and strength of Anthony "Herc" Watkins, the confidence, stage presence, and arrogance of Charles "Chucky" Durr. Last but not least, the ability to raise bodybuilding to new levels and reap the financial benefits like my bodybuilding idol, Shawn Ray. It you take the different qualities, wrap them all together and cover them with the unconditional love of my wife, Jan and my mother Heroa, this is the ending product I ask God everyday to help me become. P.S - The man is back Sir Earl August 28, 2002 Changing Seasons As fall approaches and the glory days of summer fade into memory, we begin to alter our lifestyle habits. Gone are the barbeques, tank tops and shorts. They are replaced with indoor gatherings, blue jeans, sweatshirts and jackets. Just as we experience seasonal changes, we also must experience life cycle changes. Sometimes life's sun glows down upon you and everyday is an unending joyous occasion. Then other times the dark clouds hover above and the stormy days come around. These cycles are a lot gloomier and depressing, often difficult to get through. But the good news is that if it is God's divine will and according to his master plan, we will see sunny and joyous times again. Sometimes it is God's plan to remove certain obstacles of negativity from your blinded vision. He does this not only unmask the enemies that dwell within, but to bring you closer into the fold so that you may appreciate Him and those who truly love you just for being YOU. When the seasons of change slow down a bit and its just you and the mirror, do you like what you see looking back at you? 1. Do you see an individual that truly stands for something? Or the person your adversaries try to make you out to be? 2. Do you see a reflection that was empty and now through osmosis appears to be full? Or is it an empty soul staring back at you? 3. Do you see a schemer that attempts to destroy through silent deception? I now know what I see in that mirror, how about you? Just at summer can never be winter and winter can never be spring, we can never be what we are not. If we don't aim high and always seek to do God's perfect will, then we are nothing and that is the best we can ever hope to be. When we strive for only the Masters approval, and forget about pleasing man then we are on the path to greater achievements in this life. When we are the cream of God's crop, we will always rise to the top. Sir Earl August 21, 2002 Idiotic Comments Comments like, "don't crush my hand", "What-up Big Man?" "Do you workout?", "I use to be your size but I stopped because I didn't want to get big" and my all time favorites….."How much can you bench?" and "Do you take steroids?" are a few of the many idiotic remarks directed toward myself and probably most other body builders in the course of a normal day. Although I try to always keep my physique covered, when you are 5'7" and 235 lbs. It's hard to not stand out in a crowd as a true bodybuilder. I chose only to display my body to judges in the heat of battle, where I am compared to other bodybuilders of equal caliber. So you will not see me in public wearing a tight tank top and shorts made of spandex. Why? Because the general public does not understand what bodybuilding is all about. They believe we are all vain, dumb, pill popping, needle sticking, steroid using, no life having idiots! My temperament does not allow me the patience to try and educate them. I would prefer the subtle tactic of smacking them across their head. If they took time to talk with most bodybuilders they would discover that most are college graduates, good fathers and husbands, business owners and are genuinely nice people (some of us). We are normal people who choose to dedicate 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day, 5 to 6 days a week to what challenges and make us happy. The passion for weight training is something that bodybuilders possess that the average, out of shape person doesn't. That passion is the simple dedication and commitment to physical goals. Maybe if I had a big gut, I was coughing because my lungs were destroyed from smoking, I had a weak lever from binge drinking, a flat ass from being a couch potato, shortness of breath because I was overweight, high cholesterol from a bad diet and if I was a candidate for a heart attach from all of the above; perhaps then you would see me and ask how I was doing today. Perhaps I would be asked about the weather and current events, and not the same idiotic questions over and over again. Yet on second thought, being normal is much too boring…I'll see you guys when I get back from the gym. Sir Earl
